Gregory OÃÂÃÂÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂBrien is a poet, anthologist, art writer and painter. Born in Matamata in 1961, he trained as a journalist in Auckland and worked as a newspaper reporter in Northland before returning to study art history and English at Auckland University. In 2004 Gregory edited Rosalie Gascoigne Plain Air (VUP and City Gallery Wellington co-publication) He has written many collections of poetry, the most recent Winter I Was was published by Victoria University Press in 1999. He has also published a study of contemporary New Zealand painters Lands and Deeds (1996) and also a book entitled Hotere-Out The Black Window in 1997. He has, with his wife poet Jenny Bornholdt, edited a collection of New Zealand love poetry My Heart Goes Swimming(1996) and they, with Mark Williams, edited An Anthology of New Zealand Poetry in English (1997) which won the 1997 Montana New Zealand Book Award for Poetry. In 2002 he published a collection of essays, criticism and memoir called After Bathing at BaxterÃÂÃÂÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs. (VUP) He co-edited Parihaka: The Art of Passive Resistance(VUP 2001) with Te Miringa Hohaia and Lara Strongman which was joint winner of the History & Biography category in the 2001 The Montana NZ Book Awards. One of his poems "Ode to Te Whiti-O-Rongmai" was selected for the online collection Best NZ Poems 2001. "Dark Room" was chosen as one of the Best New Zealand Poems 2003. He divides his time between the literary and visual arts and lives in Wellington with his family.
