Lochie Teague MBChB, DCH, FRACP, FRCPA was raised in Wellington, and graduated from Otago University awarded distinction in medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and surgery. With a determination to tackle the challenge of childhood cancers and greatly improve survival rates, he was destined to pursue a career in paediatric oncology. He became New Zealand's first qualified paediatric haematologist, and joined Starship in January 1992. He became clinical director of paediatric haematology/oncology in 1998, a position he still holds. He is also the Starship principal investigator for the Children's Oncology Group, an international collaboration dedicated to improving the outcomes for all children with cancer. He has witnessed the evolution of Starship from its inception and been a member of the team of staff dedicated to delivering world-class specialist health services.
